US extends lifting of defense trade restrictions for Cyprus

The United States government has officially renewed the lifting of International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) restrictions regarding the Republic of Cyprus for the 2027 fiscal year. This policy, which will remain in effect until at least September 30, 2027, permits the export, re-export, and transfer of defense equipment and services from the U.S. to Cyprus. The Cypriot Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomed the decision, stating that it serves as recognition of the deepening strategic partnership between the two nations in the areas of security, crisis management, and civilian evacuation operations.

While the current extension is granted on an annual basis, Nicosia is actively pursuing a long-term resolution. Cypriot officials and lawmakers are working on bipartisan efforts in the U.S. Congress to secure a permanent repeal of the arms embargo or at least a five-year extension. The Ministry of Defense confirmed that current strategic planning remains unaffected by the procedural nature of the annual renewals, as the country continues to prioritize its role in promoting stability in the Eastern Mediterranean.
