Cyprus and Greece discuss integration of air defence systems

Cypriot Defence Minister Vasilis Palmas and his Greek counterpart Nikos Dendias met on September 13, 2026, to discuss the strategic interoperability of their respective air defence networks. The primary focus of these talks was the integration of Cyprus’s BARAK MX air defence systems into Greece’s newly announced €3 billion defence initiative, known as the 'Achilles Shield'.

Central to this collaboration is the integration of Israeli-developed technology, which has already been proven in active combat environments. Military planners highlighted that beyond interception capabilities, the effectiveness of this network lies in advanced radar systems. These radars are expected to provide both nations with a unified operational picture across the Aegean and the eastern Mediterranean by feeding data into a central command-and-control (C2) architecture. This approach ensures that data from various sensors is synthesized to manage threats efficiently across the region.

While the integration does not mandate direct communication between every individual weapon platform, it establishes a framework for collective air defence. The initiative reflects a broader effort to synchronize the defence architectures of Athens and Nicosia, leveraging sophisticated sensors to enhance long-range detection and situational awareness.
