Marcus Edwards commits to play for the Cyprus national football team

On September 13, 2026, the Cyprus Football Association (CFA) officially announced that 27-year-old attacking midfielder Marcus Edwards has agreed to represent Cyprus at the international level. Edwards, who currently plays for Burnley in the English Championship and previously developed through the Tottenham Hotspur academy, has already secured a Cypriot passport. He had previously represented England at the youth level up to the under-20s.

The decision follows months of communication between the player, national coach Apostolos Mantzios, and the CFA. Efforts to secure his commitment involved coordination between the football association and journalist Michalis Giakoumi, who helped facilitate the process. Coach Mantzios had maintained contact with Edwards since last March to convince him of the project's long-term vision.

Following his formal acceptance, administrative procedures are now underway to ensure Edwards is eligible for selection in the upcoming UEFA Nations League fixtures. Coach Mantzios has noted that this addition aims to strengthen the team's attacking options as part of a broader strategy to revitalize the national squad. Additionally, the coach indicated that further recruitments from the Cypriot diaspora are being considered as the team aims to become a competitive force in their group.
