Cyprus parliamentary committees set to discuss national and legislative priorities

Starting Monday, September 14, 2026, parliamentary committees in Cyprus will convene to address a wide array of domestic and foreign policy issues. The legislative agenda includes discussions on the priorities of the Irish presidency of the EU, ongoing security risks in the Nicosia FIR caused by Turkish aircraft, and the status of school infrastructure, specifically the installation of air conditioning systems and the timely delivery of textbooks. Additionally, the assembly will review new civil service promotion procedures and the operations of the Advisory Council following public backlash regarding recent appointments to semi-governmental organizations.

Controversial topics are also slated for review, including the leasing of Turkish-Cypriot properties in the Larnaca district. Furthermore, the Environment Committee will examine the activities of specific environmental activist organizations following a proposal by ELAM. This discussion, which has triggered significant social media reaction, aims to evaluate whether measures are necessary to manage such activism. Finally, the committees will conduct an ex-officio examination concerning the protection of children under state care and the adequacy of support systems provided to them.
