Cypriot leaders to meet ahead of UN General Assembly
Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman are scheduled to hold their final meeting on Thursday, September 17, 2026, before attending the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York. The meeting is set for 11:00 a.m. and serves as part of their regular diplomatic communication and ongoing dialogue regarding the island's political situation.
Ahead of this leaders' meeting, the Greek Cypriot negotiator Menelaos Menelaou is expected to meet with the Turkish Cypriot side's special representative, Mehmet Dana, on Monday afternoon. These discussions form the basis of preparation for the High-level Week of the 81st UN General Assembly, which runs from September 18 to September 28, 2026.
Meanwhile, the UN Secretary-General's Personal Envoy, Maria Angela Holguin, has postponed her visit to the island and her subsequent travel to New York due to health reasons. Reports confirm that as of now, there has been no update regarding her anticipated teleconference with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
