Cyprus government unveils water security strategy and ongoing infrastructure updates in Limassol

The Cypriot government, led by Minister of Agriculture Christos Senekis, has announced a major long-term strategy to ensure water security through the construction of four new second-generation desalination plants. These facilities, planned for Agia Thekla, Polis Chrysochous, and eastern and western Limassol, aim to reduce reliance on rainfall by 2031. The initiative is part of a broader investment program exceeding 200 million euros covering the 2024–2030 period, which also includes the modernization of water networks and the reuse of treated wastewater.

Simultaneously, the Limassol Sewerage Board (EOA Limassol) is advancing several water storage tank projects across the Limassol district. While several tanks in areas such as Agios Athanasios, Germasogeia, and Agia Fyla are either complete or in the maintenance phase, work continues on upgrading the sewage network, with approximately 85% of planned roads already completed. The funding for the tank projects is sourced from the EU’s Next Generation EU recovery plan, while the broader agricultural sector is supported by the CAP Strategic Plan 2023–2027.

Looking ahead, the Ministry is focused on agricultural sustainability and addressing water shortages. Minister Senekis is scheduled to present a revised water allocation proposal to the Council of Ministers, aiming to balance domestic and irrigation needs while modernizing the agricultural sector to attract younger professionals.
