Infrastructure upgrades to secure water supply in the Limassol region and across Cyprus

New water storage and desalination infrastructure projects are underway in Cyprus to secure a stable supply of drinking and irrigation water. In the Limassol region, the EOAL (Limassol Water Development Department) is overseeing the completion of water tanks in Agios Athanasios (2,000 m3), Kato Polemidia (2,000 m3), Germasogeia (4,000 m3), and Agia Fyla (800 m3). Projects in the latter three locations, totaling 2.9 million euros, are supported by the European Union's Next Generation EU recovery and resilience plan.

Simultaneously, following a Cabinet decision on September 2, 2026, the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment is advancing four permanent desalination plants in Eastern Limassol, Agia Thekla, Polis Chrysochous, and Dhekelia. These facilities will produce a combined 180,000 cubic meters of water daily. Minister Christos Senekis stated that improved hydrological conditions in 2026 allowed for an additional allocation of 3.5 million cubic meters of irrigation water. The government is investing over 200 million euros between 2024 and 2030 to reduce dependency on rainfall through enhanced desalination, water recycling, and network upgrades.
