Cyprus reports 92% decline in irregular migration arrivals

Cyprus has recorded a 92% decrease in irregular migrant arrivals compared to 2022, according to Deputy Minister of Migration and International Protection Nikolas Ioannidis. This significant decline is attributed to a combination of strategic measures, including enhanced surveillance of the Green Line, the installation of advanced camera systems, increased maritime patrols, and the accelerated processing of asylum applications to facilitate faster returns.

Authorities have also obtained video evidence documenting human smugglers operating within the occupied territories, where they are seen guiding migrants toward government-controlled areas. In response, the administration has reinforced security measures across the buffer zone to mitigate these illegal activities. Furthermore, the government is adjusting its labor strategy, acknowledging that foreign workers are necessary to fill domestic labor shortages. Moving forward, officials aim to balance security concerns with the need for managed legal immigration to support the national economy.
