Cyprus and IAEA to sign memorandum on nuclear safety and training

On September 13, 2026, the Minister of Labor and Social Insurance of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr. Mousiouttas, traveled to Vienna to attend the General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). During his visit, the Minister is scheduled to deliver a national statement on behalf of Cyprus and conduct a private meeting with IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi.

The primary purpose of this meeting is to sign a Memorandum of Understanding focused on enhancing cooperation in the field of nuclear safety and security. A significant component of this agreement involves the utilization of the Cyprus Centre for Land, Open-seas and Port Security (CYCLOPS), located in Larnaca, as a regional training center for the IAEA. The CYCLOPS facility, which was developed in close collaboration with the United States government, will serve to bolster regional protection protocols and align operations with international nuclear monitoring standards.

This initiative marks a formal step toward integrating Cyprus into the broader international framework for nuclear security. Following the signing, the partnership aims to leverage the technical capabilities of the CYCLOPS center to provide specialized training for regional stakeholders, thereby strengthening overall institutional security standards in the Eastern Mediterranean.
