FIFA imposes lifetime ban on former Maldives football chief

On September 11, FIFA announced a lifetime ban from all football-related activities for Bassam Adeel Jaleel, the former president of the Football Association of Maldives (FAM). The sanction follows findings that Jaleel misused Covid-19 pandemic relief funds for personal gain. In addition to the ban, FIFA has ordered him to pay a fine of one million Swiss francs.

Alongside Jaleel, the former FAM director of finance and administration, Mohamed Aqeel, received a 10-year ban and a 100,000 Swiss franc fine. Aqeel was found guilty of facilitating and concealing the misuse of FIFA funds, utilizing forged documents, and refusing to cooperate with independent investigators. The case stems from ongoing broader allegations of money laundering, embezzlement, and corruption within the organization.

Regarding his current legal status, local reports indicate that Jaleel was moved to house arrest last month following a recommendation from a medical board. He had previously been granted house arrest in March, but was returned to prison shortly thereafter due to significant public outcry.
