Cyprus primary schools begin 2026-2027 academic year

The 2026-2027 academic year for primary and nursery education in Cyprus officially commenced on Monday, September 14, 2026. Approximately 67,000 students returned to classrooms, including 52,186 in primary schools and 14,398 in nursery schools. The intake of first-grade students reached 8,919. A total of 328 primary schools and 274 kindergartens are operating this year, supported by 5,232 primary teachers and 1,135 nursery educators. The Ministry of Education has expanded the optional all-day school program to 383 locations, an increase of over 60 units.

Despite the commencement of classes, the sector faces several administrative and structural challenges. The teachers' union (POED) has raised concerns regarding staffing shortages in administrative roles and the late delivery of textbooks. While the Ministry claims 97% of the 700 required titles have been delivered, some educators reported using photocopies to bridge gaps. Infrastructure issues, such as missing air conditioning and the use of portable classrooms, remain significant points of contention, with some parents in Episkopi protesting to demand immediate solutions. Education Minister Athena Michaelidou stated that professional disagreements should not impact students, while President Nikos Christodoulides, during visits to schools in Agios Dometios and Strovolos, emphasized that education remains a government priority, pledging the installation of air conditioning in all school units.
