New academic year begins for primary and pre-primary students in Cyprus

On September 14, 2026, the new academic year officially commenced for approximately 67,000 children across Cyprus. Over 52,000 pupils returned to 328 primary schools, with nearly 9,000 students entering the first grade, while 14,398 children attended nursery schools. The ministry noted that optional all-day schools have expanded to 383 locations.

President Nikos Christodoulides and Education Minister Athena Michaelidou marked the occasion by visiting the Agios Dometios Gymnasium, Constantinople Primary School, and the School for the Deaf. During these visits, the President emphasized that education is the government's highest priority, highlighting ongoing reforms to curricula, teacher evaluation systems, and a €132 million investment in school infrastructure. Addressing concerns regarding classroom temperatures, the President admitted that student protests were justified and pledged to install air conditioning in all schools by 2028.

Minister Michaelidou urged collaboration between families and educators, stressing that constructive dialogue regarding management issues should not impact students. Meanwhile, the President announced that a legislative bill concerning special education will be submitted to the Council of Ministers on September 30 to improve facility frameworks and educational standards.
