Primary schools open in Cyprus for the 2026-2027 academic year

Primary schools across Cyprus open their doors on September 14, 2026, welcoming over 67,000 students to the new academic year. The school system will be supported by approximately 8,000 teachers. The Ministry of Education, Sport and Youth has prioritized school efficiency, skill development, and the combatting of violence, while the expansion of mandatory pre-primary education has increased enrollment in kindergartens by 600 children.

Despite the preparations, the start of the year is marked by administrative and logistical challenges. The teachers' union POED and the Organized Parents' Association have expressed concerns regarding staff shortages, particularly in administrative positions at larger kindergartens, and delays in staffing full-day schools. Furthermore, reports indicate that many classrooms remain without air conditioning, and textbooks for certain subjects are not expected to arrive until October. The Minister of Education has called for unity, stressing that internal administrative disputes and professional disagreements should not interfere with the students' learning environment.
