Start of the school year and infrastructure challenges in Cyprus

The 2026-2027 school year began in Cyprus on September 14, 2026, with 52,186 students attending primary schools. President Nikos Christodoulides marked the occasion by visiting schools, announcing a €1.5 million investment to upgrade the School for the Deaf, with work scheduled to start in January 2027. Additionally, he pledged €10,000 for immediate urgent needs at the institution.

Despite the start of classes, tensions have risen regarding the government's progress on infrastructure projects, specifically the installation of air conditioning units in public schools. Critics, including opposition party AKEL and student organizations, noted that a three-year deadline for the air conditioning project, originally set in 2023, has expired with limited results. In response to these concerns, the student coordinating committee (PSEM) has called for a classroom walkout on September 16, 2026. Education Minister Athena Michaelidou urged students to engage in dialogue, stating that the government recognizes these issues as priorities.

Further disruption is expected on September 17, 2026, due to a 24-hour strike by school support staff and government employees. The Ministry of Education has advised parents to keep children requiring specialized care or support at home during the strike, as standard supervision will not be available. Discussions regarding the teacher appointment system are also ongoing between the ministry and the teachers' union (POED).
