Cyprus Anti-Corruption Authority to address the 'black van' surveillance case

The Independent Authority Against Corruption in Cyprus is scheduled to issue a formal announcement today, September 14, 2026, regarding the long-standing 'black van' surveillance case. The announcement follows a pledge made last Wednesday by Transparency Commissioner Charis Poyiatzis during a session of the parliamentary Committee on Institutions.

During the committee meeting, which focused on the European Commission's rule of law report for Cyprus, MP Irini Charalambidou questioned the status of the investigation. While the Authority had previously begun preliminary work on the matter, there has been significant public and political debate regarding its progress. Legislators, including Konstantinos Konstantinou of AKEL, have criticized the perceived summary closure of previous investigations, leading to calls for the case to be reopened. Meanwhile, officials from the Ministry of Justice noted that legislation intended to enhance the investigative powers of the Authority is currently undergoing evaluation.

The upcoming announcement is expected to clarify whether the Authority will proceed with a full-scale investigation, including the appointment of inspection officers and the summoning of witnesses, or provide reasons for not pursuing the case further.
