Parliamentary inquiry into environmental activist groups sparks controversy

The Cypriot parliamentary Committee on the Environment is set to hold a contentious hearing this coming Wednesday regarding the activities of environmental organizations, specifically targeting the Committee Against Bird Slaughter (CABS). The debate, which aims to evaluate the necessity of new regulations for activists, was initiated on June 23, 2026, by ELAM MPs Linos Papayiannis and Linos Ioannis Hadjigeorgiou with support from DIKO and DISY parties.

Critics, including AKEL MP Marina Nicolaou, argue that the inquiry serves as a vehicle to target organizations that expose illegal bird poaching on the island. Initially, the motion was titled as an investigation into the 'uncontrolled action of so-called activists,' but it was later revised following political pushback. Environmentalists fear that such parliamentary scrutiny may undermine efforts to combat poaching, which currently relies on collaboration between international organizations and local authorities.

In defense of the hearing, ELAM MP Linos Hadjigeorgiou stated that the issue is not about environmental protection itself, but rather about ensuring all activities remain within legal boundaries. He cited alleged public complaints regarding activists' use of hidden cameras and illegal surveillance. The committee's upcoming session remains a focal point for debate on the balance between legal protest and the privacy rights of citizens.
