Passenger ship sinks in Indonesia leaving over 100 missing

A passenger ship named Virgo Transport 8 sank in the Java Sea early on Sunday after encountering bad weather. The vessel, which was carrying 243 people, including 30 crew members, was traveling from Surabaya in East Java to Banjarmasin in South Kalimantan when it lost contact with authorities.

As of Monday, rescue teams have confirmed 108 survivors and six deaths, leaving 129 people still missing. A massive search operation involving 622 personnel, 17 ships, and five aircraft and helicopters has been launched to locate the missing passengers. Officials reported that the search efforts are currently hindered by severe weather conditions, including choppy waters and strong winds, which prevent divers from accessing the submerged vessel. The rescue agency plans to deploy specialized underwater personnel once the weather improves to safely reach the capsized ship.
