Danish film A Woman wins Golden Lion at 83rd Venice Film Festival

The 83rd Venice Film Festival concluded on Saturday, September 12, 2026, with a ceremony at the Lido. The festival's top honor, the Golden Lion for Best Film, was awarded to the Danish drama-thriller 'A Woman,' directed by May el-Toukhy. Set in the aftermath of World War II, the film follows a nanny whose planned marriage to her wealthy employer is threatened by secrets from her past. Lead actress Matilde Arcel also received the Volpi Cup for Best Actress for her performance in the film.

This year’s festival was noted for a strong lineup of films addressing significant social and political themes, including historical and contemporary conflicts in Gaza, Ukraine, and Vietnam. While initial press speculation had suggested other contenders for the top prize, including works by Lee Chang-dong, Martin McDonagh, and Ali Asgari, the jury ultimately selected el-Toukhy's work. The director dedicated her victory to women whose stories often go unheard, describing the film as an exploration of the female body as a battlefield.
