Cyprus Chamber of Commerce calls for extension of zero VAT on meat and fish

The Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI), led by Secretary General Philokypros Roussounides, has formally requested that Finance Minister Makis Keravnos extend the zero VAT rate currently applied to meat and fish. The request pertains to the continuation of Decree K.D.P. 168/2026, which is intended to mitigate inflationary pressures and maintain price stability for essential food items.

In its letter, the chamber argues that the measure has been instrumental in supporting Cypriot households and ensuring the smooth operation of the food supply chain. The CCCI emphasizes that businesses in the retail and wholesale sectors continue to struggle with elevated operational expenses, including rising energy, transportation, and labor costs. According to the chamber, allowing the current tax relief to expire could lead to higher final consumer prices, reducing purchasing power and complicating efforts to keep the market competitive amidst ongoing economic uncertainty.

The government has not yet provided a response to the proposal. The CCCI maintains that sustaining this fiscal intervention is essential for protecting both businesses and consumers until economic conditions improve.
