Rising tensions between Greece and Turkey over maritime and territorial disputes

Geostrategic analyst Savvas Kalenteridis has warned of a significant escalation in rhetoric between Greece and Turkey. According to statements made to the Cyprus News Agency on September 14, 2026, the primary catalysts for this friction include the development of an electricity interconnection cable and Turkey’s proposed 'Blue Homeland' legislation, which is expected to create a new, confrontational dynamic in bilateral relations.

The current dispute has intensified following Greece's publication of maritime spatial plans, which reportedly include 152 islands whose sovereignty Turkey contests. In response, Turkey issued three formal objections through its Ministry of Foreign Affairs and declared two marine parks extending beyond its own territorial waters. These actions were met with a strong diplomatic protest from Athens, while Ankara reciprocated with its own protests against Greece's spatial planning. Furthermore, reports indicate a notable increase in Turkish military activity, including frequent drone flights over the Northern Aegean.
