Cyprus political landscape shifts ahead of 2028 presidential elections

Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides is preparing for a potential second term as he initiates a strategic path toward the 2028 presidential elections. Although he plans to formally announce his decision in 2027—following the completion of internal processes within the DISY and AKEL parties—his recent public remarks, including a statement affirming his identity as a member of the DISY political base, suggest that his campaign strategy is already underway.

Simultaneously, the Democratic Party (DIKO), a government coalition partner, has initiated its own internal procedures to determine its position for the upcoming election. DIKO leader Nikolas Papadopoulos emphasized that support for President Christodoulides is not guaranteed and that the party will consult its base before reaching a final decision through its Central Committee by the end of the year. While party ministers are reportedly pushing for continued alignment with the administration, the leadership maintains that the government’s overall performance will be a critical factor in their eventual endorsement.
