Cyprus political parties prepare for 2028 presidential elections

As the 2028 presidential elections approach in Cyprus, major political parties are initiating internal discussions and strategic evaluations. The Democratic Rally (DISY) is currently experiencing internal friction, with President Annita Demetriou and former leader Averof Neofytou competing for influence, while George Pamboridis is also positioning himself for a potential candidacy. The party’s formal decision-making process for the election remains pending as they navigate these leadership challenges.

Simultaneously, the Democratic Party (DIKO) is engaged in internal consultations to define its electoral strategy. Although DIKO currently supports President Nikos Christodoulides, party leader Nikolas Papadopoulos has emphasized that no support is guaranteed and that final decisions will be made by the party’s central committee by the end of the year. While some government ministers within DIKO advocate for Christodoulides' re-election, other party officials suggest exploring independent candidacies or alliances with AKEL. President Christodoulides has indicated he will announce his intentions in 2027, focusing on his legislative agenda and maintaining government stability with coalition partners in the interim.
