Search operations resume at the Filo jet crash site off Kyrenia

Search and rescue operations have intensified at the site of the Filo jet crash, which occurred on August 30 off the coast of Kyrenia. A specialized deep-water vessel, Optimus Prime, owned by a private Turkish firm and chartered by local authorities following a visit by Prime Minister Unal Ustel to Turkey, began operations today. The mission aims to access the wreckage, which rests at a depth of 554 meters, in a renewed effort to locate the remaining missing individuals. No new bodies have been recovered since September 7.

Families of the victims continue to maintain a vigil at the Kyrenia port, awaiting information. Concurrently, a political shift has occurred within the administration, with Faiz Sucuoglu assuming the role of Minister of Transport. Sucuoglu takes over from Acting Minister Ozdemir Berova, marking a change in leadership during this ongoing crisis. The deployment of advanced technical equipment is intended to penetrate the internal sections of the submerged craft, which had previously proved inaccessible during initial recovery attempts. Authorities remain focused on the underwater search, though no specific timeline for the conclusion of the mission has been established.
