Cyprus hourly-paid government workers to hold 24-hour strike on September 17

More than 11,000 hourly-paid workers in Cyprus have announced a 24-hour nationwide strike for Thursday, September 17, 2026. The industrial action, organized by unions OEKDY SEK, PASYEK PEO, and DEE KDOKO DEOK, will affect public services including ministries, school boards, and state hospitals (OKYPY). A protest rally is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. outside the Presidential Palace in Nicosia.

The strike follows a breakdown in negotiations regarding the renewal of collective labor agreements for 2025-2027. Workers are demanding a wage increase of 2% for 2025 and 3% for both 2026 and 2027 to address the rising cost of living, while criticizing the government for stagnation. The Ministry of Finance has rejected the request, citing an estimated cost exceeding 300 million euros annually if applied broadly, and has appealed to the unions to return to the bargaining table. The ministry also expressed disappointment, noting that several previous negotiation sessions had already taken place.

The strike is expected to severely disrupt essential services, including lifeguard coverage across all districts, the Forestry Department, and the Fire Service. While current actions are limited to 24 hours, labor unions have warned of potential further escalation, including a 48-hour strike, if no positive progress is made.
