Mosquito surge in Strovolos caused by bridge construction

Residents near the GSP stadium in Strovolos are facing an unbearable surge in mosquito populations, prompting a wave of complaints to the Health Services. Authorities have identified the cause of the infestation as the accumulation of stagnant water in the riverbed near the area.

The problem stems from construction work for a new bridge under Dimitris Christofias Avenue. According to Herodotos Herodotou, head of the Health Ministry’s Health Services, the contractor moved large volumes of soil, which obstructed the natural flow of the river and created ideal breeding grounds for mosquitoes. This assessment is supported by photographic evidence.

In response to the crisis, initial spraying operations have been carried out in the affected green spaces and along the river. However, authorities are under pressure to take further immediate action, specifically the removal of the soil and the restoration of the river's natural water flow to permanently eliminate the breeding sites.
