Nicosia faces surge in mosquito population and West Nile virus cases

Residents in the Nicosia region, particularly near the GSP stadium in Strovolos, are reporting an unbearable surge in mosquito populations. Health authorities identified that construction work on a bridge beneath Dimitris Christofias Avenue resulted in the movement of large volumes of soil, which blocked the natural river flow and created stagnant water breeding grounds. While immediate spraying operations have been conducted, officials are calling for the urgent removal of the soil to restore the riverbed's natural drainage.

Simultaneously, the Ministry of Health has reported a series of West Nile virus cases across the Nicosia district. Infections have been confirmed in municipalities including Nicosia, Strovolos, and Lakatamia, as well as the communities of Mammari, Deftera, and Paliometocho. Herodotos Herodotou, head of the Health Ministry’s Health Services, confirmed that an action plan is being implemented, involving door-to-door tracing and targeted spraying around the residences of infected individuals.

Public concern continues to rise as citizens report that the mosquito plague prevents outdoor activity, forcing families to remain indoors. Authorities are also inspecting other areas across Nicosia, citing that improper disposal of water-retaining waste materials is exacerbating the infestation. The situation remains under active investigation with local authorities working in coordination to mitigate further health risks.
