Commemoration of the 27th anniversary of Yiannos Kranidiotis' passing

September 14, 2026, marks 27 years since the tragic death of Yiannos Kranidiotis, a pivotal figure in Greek foreign policy and a key strategist for Cyprus. Kranidiotis, who died in a plane accident on September 14, 1999, remains celebrated for his significant role as the architect of the Cyprus Republic's accession to the European Union.

During the 1990s, Kranidiotis was instrumental in shifting the strategic approach toward the Cyprus problem. He challenged the prevailing consensus in both Athens and Nicosia by arguing that EU membership should be sought as a tool to strengthen the Republic of Cyprus, rather than waiting for a political resolution as a prerequisite. Following the Republic of Cyprus' formal application to the European Communities on July 3, 1990, he worked systematically across European capitals to advance this goal, setting a new course for the Hellenic world.
