Chevron targets global gas expansion amid energy security concerns
American energy giant Chevron is planning to expand its global natural gas and liquefied natural gas (LNG) portfolio, with a strategic focus on regions ranging from Argentina to the Eastern Mediterranean. Freeman Shaheen, President of Global Gas at Chevron, announced these intentions on September 14, 2026, during the Gastech conference held in Bangkok.
The expansion strategy is driven by rising global demand for energy security following significant geopolitical disruptions over the last four years, specifically the 2022 war in Ukraine and the recent conflict in the Middle East. Shaheen emphasized that these events have demonstrated a critical need for suppliers to diversify sources and move away from over-reliance on volatile spot markets, which lack the liquidity of oil markets. While the company identified the Eastern Mediterranean as a particularly exciting area for future investment, specific project locations were not disclosed.
Contextually, Chevron has been active in regional development; in June 2026, the company received official approval to act as an operator and lead offshore natural gas exploration in Greece. The company's future focus remains on stabilizing long-term contractual structures to provide a more reliable energy supply amid shifting international conditions.
