DIKO and CCCI discuss pension reform proposals

On September 14, 2026, the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI), led by Chairman Stavros Stavrou, held a meeting with the President of the Democratic Party (DIKO), Nikolas Papadopoulos, to discuss the government's proposed pension system reform. Both sides acknowledged the necessity of modernizing the current framework to ensure its long-term viability and to better serve the interests of the Cypriot economy.

The proposed reform involves significant changes to the architectural design of the pension system, including a redistribution between basic and supplementary pensions, as well as the introduction of new contribution and credit categories. The CCCI expressed concerns regarding the potential impact of these changes on businesses and insured individuals. Chamber representatives emphasized that the Ministry of Labor has not yet provided sufficient data, including a full cost analysis and funding sources, which the organization deems essential before finalizing any positions.

Nikolas Papadopoulos described the reform as one of the most complex and critical initiatives currently under consideration by the government. He advocated for a rational approach that considers the sustainability of the Social Insurance Fund. Moving forward, the parties agreed on the importance of continued dialogue with all stakeholders to ensure all aspects are thoroughly examined before legislative decisions are made.
