Political standoff in Cyprus over the black van surveillance case

Tensions between the AKEL party and the Democratic Rally (DISY) have intensified following the Legal Service's decision to block the Independent Authority against Corruption from further investigating the 2026 black surveillance van case. AKEL, led by Stefanos Stefanou, has formally accused the Legal Service of orchestrating a cover-up to protect individuals connected to the previous Anastasiades-DISY administration. The opposition party demands the publication of the Ilias Stefanou investigative report, asserting that the evidence presented in Parliament proves the existence of a system capable of illegal mass surveillance.

In response, DISY has accused AKEL of attempting to act as investigator, accuser, and judge, arguing that the investigation of such cases is the sole prerogative of independent state institutions. The party maintains that the Legal Service and the Judiciary must handle the matter independently. While the Legal Service suspended the criminal prosecution of the main suspects in the case citing "public interest," AKEL continues to insist that this action, coupled with the refusal to allow the Anti-Corruption Authority to intervene, highlights a systemic failure to protect the rule of law. As of mid-September 2026, the investigation remains stalled, with AKEL calling for accountability and the immediate reopening of the case.
