Cyprus police unions meet with Ministry of Justice to discuss legal amendments

On September 14, 2026, representatives from the Cyprus Police Association (SAK), the Isotita union, and the Pancyprian Public Servants Union met with Minister of Justice and Public Order Kostas Fytiris to discuss comprehensive amendments to the Police Law. While one report identified Marios Hartsiotis as the minister, subsequent reports clarified that the meeting took place with Minister Kostas Fytiris.

The discussion addressed several critical concerns regarding police working conditions. Key issues included the regulation of public holidays, requests for the restoration of the "11–37" shift schedule, and the introduction of hazard allowances for station and branch heads. Furthermore, the unions proposed legislative changes to exempt security forces from specific overtime compensation rules affecting work between 14:30 and 17:00.

All parties described the initial meeting as constructive and agreed to hold follow-up sessions. These future meetings aim to analyze all aspects of the proposals and facilitate a consensus before submitting the final draft to the House of Representatives for approval. Stakeholders expressed a commitment to resolving these issues, with an implementation horizon tentatively set for mid-October.
