Justice Minister holds meetings with police and prison unions to discuss law amendments

On September 14, 2026, the Minister of Justice and Public Order, Costas Fitiris, held meetings with representatives from the Cyprus Police Association (SAK), the 'Isotita' union, and the PASYDY civil service union to discuss the comprehensive amendment of the Police Law. The discussions focused on modernizing the institutional framework governing police operations, including recruitment processes, promotions, retirement ages, and the reorganization of specialized departments. Safety measures for officers injured or killed on duty are also undergoing legal vetting prior to parliamentary submission.

Police and prison staff representatives highlighted several pressing operational and labor issues. Key demands include the restoration of the '11–37' work schedule, adjustments to hazard allowances for station and branch heads, and overtime compensation. Prison guard unions also raised concerns regarding staffing levels, safety protocols, and the potential conversion of their service status. Following the constructive dialogue, the Ministry agreed to exchange formal proposals with the unions. A roadmap has been established to review all aspects of these requests, with the goal of finalizing recommendations and presenting them to the House of Representatives by mid-October.
