China and India offer mediation for peace in Ukraine at BRICS summit

During the BRICS summit held in New Delhi, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered to mediate in the conflict in Ukraine. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed on September 13, 2026, that Russian President Vladimir Putin welcomed the initiatives from both leaders. These discussions took place on the sidelines of the summit, where international leaders convened to address global cooperation.

Simultaneously, President Xi and Prime Minister Modi held bilateral talks to address a long-standing border dispute that has strained relations between their nations for six years, following a deadly conflict in the Himalayas. The two leaders pledged to resolve these territorial disagreements in a fair and rational manner. While this meeting marks a significant step toward thawing diplomatic tensions, analysts note that mutual distrust persists between the two powers.

President Xi departed New Delhi on September 13 following the conclusion of his visit. As of now, while the offers for peace mediation were welcomed by Moscow, no specific follow-up actions or dates for diplomatic meetings regarding the Ukraine conflict have been announced.
