Cyprus meteorological service issues yellow weather warning for storms

The Cyprus Meteorological Service has issued a yellow weather warning due to an atmospheric disturbance approaching from the west. The alert is in effect from 9:00 PM on Thursday, September 17, until 5:00 PM on Friday, September 18, 2026. Experts anticipate localized, intense thunderstorms accompanied by heavy rainfall, with intensities estimated between 35 and 55 millimeters per hour. Hail and strong wind gusts, potentially reaching 8 on the Beaufort scale, are also expected during the event.

Weather conditions will initially affect the western half of the island, including areas such as Polis Chrysochous, Akamas, and the coastal regions of Paphos and Limassol, before spreading to the rest of the country. Residents are urged to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions as the low-pressure system moves across the island. The weather is expected to remain unsettled on Friday, with significant improvement forecast for late Friday afternoon. By the weekend, conditions are anticipated to return to mostly clear skies with only minor isolated cloud formations in mountainous areas, accompanied by a gradual rise in temperatures.
