Cyprus weather: Yellow alert issued for heavy storms and hail

Cyprus is bracing for a significant shift in weather conditions as a low-pressure system moves from the south of Crete toward the island. The Department of Meteorology has issued a yellow weather warning effective from 21:00 on Thursday, September 17, until 17:00 on Friday, September 18, 2026. The alert forecasts isolated strong thunderstorms, particularly impacting the western half of the island, including Paphos, Polis Chrysochous, and Akamas, before spreading to other areas.

Authorities warn that rainfall intensity may reach between 35 and 55 millimeters per hour, accompanied by localized hail and strong wind gusts reaching up to 8 Beaufort. Temperatures are expected to drop significantly, falling below the seasonal average, with inland highs of 34°C on Thursday and much cooler conditions following on Friday. The unsettled weather is expected to begin subsiding by late Friday afternoon, with conditions improving over the weekend. Residents are advised to prepare for intense phenomena and potential disruptions as the first significant rains of the season hit the region.
