Doctors face homicide charges in death of singer Giorgos Mazonakis

On September 14, 2026, the legal status of two doctors, Ilias Theodoropoulos and Ioanna Gaka, was significantly escalated following the death of the 54-year-old singer Giorgos Mazonakis. Prosecutors upgraded the charges against them to homicide with possible intent, an offense carrying a potential life sentence, following findings from a forensic investigation into a plasmapheresis treatment performed at a private clinic in Kolonaki, Athens.

Digital evidence recovered from the plasmapheresis machine indicates that the procedure began at 14:37, with the device recording a critical pause in blood flow at 15:22 and subsequent system alarms between 15:23 and 15:45. Despite these warnings regarding venous pressure and potential thrombosis, the call to the emergency services (EKAB) was reportedly delayed for nearly an hour. Testimony from a taxi driver suggests the singer arrived at the clinic between 13:50 and 14:00.

Following the upgraded charges, the two defendants were summoned to provide testimony and submit written statements to the 32nd investigating judge on September 15. The judicial authorities are currently evaluating these statements along with witness testimonies and equipment logs to decide on potential pre-trial detention while the investigation remains ongoing.
