Doctors face homicide charges in the death of singer Giorgos Mazonakis

The investigation into the death of popular Greek singer Giorgos Mazonakis has escalated, with doctors Ilias Theodoropoulos and Ioanna Gaka now facing charges of homicide with possible intent. The charges were upgraded by the Athens Prosecutor’s Office following the discovery of critical digital evidence recovered from the plasmapheresis machine used during the singer’s treatment at a clinic in Kolonaki on September 9, 2026.

According to police data, Mazonakis arrived at the clinic between 13:50 and 14:00, and the procedure began at 14:37. The medical equipment recorded its first critical alert at 15:22, followed by subsequent warnings. Investigators are focusing on a roughly 50-minute delay between the singer's collapse and the call to emergency services (EKAB). Reports indicate the device issued repeated alarms, with one source alleging the doctor attempted to restart the machine during the crisis. Other evidence under review includes photos taken during the session and witness statements, including those from clinic staff.

The accused doctors were summoned to appear before the 32nd examining magistrate on September 15, 2026, to provide their statements. They face the possibility of a life sentence if convicted under the upgraded charges.
