Doctors remanded in custody over death of Giorgos Mazonakis

Two physicians, Ioanna Gaka and Ilias Theodoropoulos, have been remanded in custody following their marathon testimony regarding the death of singer Giorgos Mazonakis during a plasmapheresis procedure at their private clinic in Kolonaki. Prosecutors upgraded the charges against the couple to homicide with possible intent, a serious criminal offense that could lead to life imprisonment, after evidence retrieved from the medical machine’s memory contradicted their initial accounts.

The forensic report revealed that the plasmapheresis machine triggered three separate alarms between 15:22 and 16:11, the time when emergency services were eventually notified. Investigators are currently examining whether the patient was administered unauthorized substances during the procedure and are analyzing digital evidence, including deleted photos from Gaka’s mobile phone and potential AI-assisted research regarding resuscitation techniques conducted by the defendants.

The defendants denied all accusations during their lengthy interrogation, maintaining that the clinic operated within legal standards. The judicial investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue to process toxicological results and digital traces to determine the full sequence of events that occurred inside the clinic.
