British father returns to Cyprus to face charges over son's death

A 37-year-old British banking executive returned to Cyprus on September 14 to face trial over the death of his three-year-old son, who died on July 12 after falling from a fourth-floor window at a hotel in Chlorakas. The incident occurred on the family's first day of vacation while they were waiting for an elevator; court documents allege the father placed the child on a window ledge, believing the window was closed, resulting in a fall of approximately 10 metres. He has been charged with causing death through a reckless, rash, or dangerous act, which carries a potential sentence of up to four years in prison.

The defendant, who was previously granted a temporary travel ban exemption to attend his son's funeral in Britain, has now surrendered his passport and travel documents to Cypriot authorities. His lawyer, Alexandros Alexandrou, has submitted a formal request to Attorney General George L. Savvides for the suspension of criminal proceedings, arguing that prosecution is not in the public interest. The Paphos District Court is scheduled to hear the case on September 17. If no response to the suspension request is received by that date, the father is expected to enter a plea.
