British man faces court in Cyprus following son's death

A 37-year-old British banking executive has returned to Cyprus to face trial regarding the death of his three-year-old son, who fell from a fourth-floor hotel window in Paphos on July 12. The incident occurred on the family's first day of vacation when the child, whom the father was holding while waiting for an elevator, fell approximately 10 metres after the father placed him on what he believed was a closed window ledge. The defendant faces charges of causing death through a reckless, rash, or dangerous act, which carries a potential penalty of up to four years in prison.

The father, who was previously granted a temporary travel exemption to attend his son's funeral in Britain, surrendered his passport and resumed restrictive bail conditions upon his return on September 14. His defense attorney, Alexandros Alexandrou, has formally petitioned the Attorney General to suspend the criminal prosecution on humanitarian grounds. As of September 17, the defense was still awaiting a decision on this request. If the Attorney General does not intervene, the Paphos District Court is expected to proceed with the plea hearing, where the father will be required to formally respond to the charges against him.
