British man faces court in Cyprus over son's fatal hotel fall

A 37-year-old British banking executive appeared before the Paphos District Court on September 17, following the death of his three-year-old son, who fell from a fourth-floor hotel window on July 12. The tragic incident occurred on the family's first day of holiday in Chlorakas, Paphos. The father, who had been granted a temporary travel exemption to attend his son's funeral in the UK, returned to Cyprus on September 14 and surrendered his travel documents, adhering to bail conditions that include a 20,000 euro bond and a ban on leaving the Republic.

The defendant’s lawyer, Alexandros Alexandrou, had previously requested that the Attorney General suspend criminal proceedings on humanitarian grounds. However, the Attorney General officially rejected this request, stating that while the tragedy is acknowledged, the public interest necessitates the continuation of the case. Consequently, the defense declined to enter a plea during the September 17 hearing and requested an adjournment.

The court has scheduled the next session for September 22 at 9:00 a.m., during which the defendant is expected to respond to the charges of causing death through a reckless, rash, or dangerous act. If convicted, the man faces a potential sentence of up to four years in prison.
