Five young Cypriot athletes rank among the world top 20 in 2026

The Cyprus Amateur Athletics Association (KOEAS) announced that five young Cypriot athletes have achieved top 20 global rankings in their respective disciplines within the under-18 category for the 2026 season. This milestone highlights the growing success of Cypriot youth in international track and field events as the competitive year draws to a close.

Marina Hatzikosta leads the achievements, finishing the year as the world number one in the U18 discus throw with a performance of 56.54 meters. Her international success includes a gold medal at the European U18 Championship and a bronze at the World U20 Championship. Hatzikosta also holds the 13th position globally in the U18 shot put with 14.63 meters. Other notable athletes include Anthi Apostolidou, who ranks 5th in the hammer throw (4kg) with 58.57 meters and 14th with the 3kg hammer, and Anastasios Maratheftis, who holds the 6th position in the men's hammer throw (7.26kg) at 56.51 meters and the 18th position with the 5kg hammer.

These rankings reflect the overall progression of Cypriot youth athletics. While some of these athletes are only just entering secondary school, their current global standing confirms their development as elite competitors on the international stage.
