Environmental groups and municipalities demand action on Limassol bay pollution

The Federation of Environmental Organisations of Cyprus (Opok) has called for an urgent and scientifically documented strategy to address increasing marine pollution in Limassol Bay. The federation is demanding the full operational activation of the Pollution Response Supervision and Coordination Group (PESA), a body established by the Council of Ministers in February 2025. They advocate for systematic controls, a clear distribution of responsibilities among authorities, and the strict implementation of the Barcelona Convention’s protocols regarding integrated coastal zone management.

Simultaneously, local authorities, including Amathounta Mayor Kyriakos Xydias, have highlighted that pollution stems from diverse sources, such as fish farms, commercial and recreational vessels, and illegal or improperly managed drainage pipes. The severity of the issue has led the municipalities of Limassol and Amathounta to forego Blue Flag applications for 2026, marking a significant decline from the nine flags awarded to Amathounta in 2025. Following recent high-level meetings at the Shipping Deputy Ministry, emergency works were initiated to relocate a drainage pipe linked to a major high-rise construction project that had drawn public concern. Moving forward, the federation and local municipalities are pressing for consistent on-site inspections, water sampling, and a comprehensive response protocol to hold responsible parties accountable.
