Cost for new Law Office building in Cyprus increases by 23 million euros

The construction cost for the new Attorney-General’s office in Cyprus has escalated to 68 million euros, marking a 23-million-euro increase from the initial 45-million-euro budget established in 2023. The project was previously suspended after the government cancelled the original tender in September 2023, resulting in a 51 percent rise in costs under the newly revised financial requirements.

The project has faced significant scrutiny since 2023, particularly from former auditor-general Odysseas Michaelides. He questioned the necessity of a facility designed for 400 occupants when the office only employed 193 staff members, pointing out that capital expenditure would reach 133,000 euros per employee. Michaelides also criticized the proposed dimensions of offices and common areas, recommending the exploration of alternative housing solutions for the department.

While authorities have moved forward with the project under the updated budget, the sharp increase has sparked renewed public and political attention regarding the project's oversight and fiscal management.
