New US Ambassador John Breslow meets with Cypriot leadership

The newly appointed United States Ambassador to Cyprus, John Breslow, held his inaugural meetings with Cypriot officials on September 14 and 15, 2026. Following an initial discussion with Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos on September 14, Ambassador Breslow met with President Nikos Christodoulides at the Presidential Palace the following day. These meetings aimed to reaffirm the strategic partnership between the two nations, focusing on political dialogue, energy, security, and defense cooperation.

During the discussions, the parties emphasized the importance of stability and security in the Eastern Mediterranean. Key topics addressed included the ongoing visa waiver program, energy sector initiatives involving American companies, and the potential acquisition of US defense systems by Cyprus. Ambassador Breslow, a businessman and former Nebraska state auditor nominated by President Donald Trump and confirmed by the Senate in August 2026, expressed his enthusiasm for his new role.

Looking ahead, Ambassador Breslow intends to visit the Andreas Papandreou Air Base in Paphos. This visit is particularly significant as reports indicate that US-led infrastructure upgrades and expansion projects at the base are expected to commence in early 2027.
