Prominent Cypriot diplomat Nikos Agathocleous passes away at 89

Nikos Agathocleous, a distinguished Cypriot diplomat who played a pivotal role in his country's international relations, passed away in New York on September 9, 2026, at the age of 89. Born on July 14, 1937, in the village of Galata, Nicosia, he was an alumnus of The English School in Nicosia and held postgraduate degrees from Columbia University.

Throughout his long career, which began in the 1960s, Agathocleous served in several high-profile diplomatic positions. He was a long-serving Permanent Representative of the Republic of Cyprus to the European Economic Community and subsequently to the European Union in Brussels, where he contributed significantly to Cyprus’s EU accession process. Additionally, during the 1990s, he served as the Permanent Representative of Cyprus to the United Nations in New York, where he managed key aspects of the Cyprus issue. His diplomatic service spanned decades, beginning with his early work at the Permanent Mission of Cyprus to the UN in the 1960s, marking a career defined by dedicated service to the Republic's foreign policy interests.
