Series of fires and storm-related damage reported across Cyprus

Cyprus faced a wave of incidents between September 16 and 18, 2026, including multiple wildfires in the Paphos district. Specifically, fires occurred in the Giolou, Drouseia, and Kapsali areas, threatening private homes and requiring the deployment of firefighting aircraft and ground crews from the Forestry Department and Fire Service. While authorities are investigating whether some Paphos fires were malicious, others were clearly environmental; notably, a cafe-restaurant in the Lara area was destroyed by fire after being struck by lightning during a storm on Friday morning. Additional emergency responses were triggered by several vehicle fires across the island, including incidents in Kato Moni, Xylofagou, and Limassol.

In most vehicle incidents, investigations are ongoing to determine if causes were mechanical, electrical, or suspicious. In the case of the Lara cafe and related storm damage, which included fallen trees and power outages, authorities issued yellow weather warnings for heavy rain and lightning. Firefighting operations in Paphos were successfully contained with no major injuries reported, although vehicles involved suffered extensive damage. Authorities continue to monitor the situation to prevent flare-ups and determine if malicious intent played a role in the high frequency of wildfires observed in the Drouseia-Prodromi-Skoulli triangle.
