Mathiatis heritage group opposes new prison site selection

The Mathiatis Historical and Environmental Heritage Protection Group has formally expressed strong opposition to the proposed construction of new central prison facilities within the administrative boundaries of the Mathiatis community. The group characterized the government's plan as unacceptable, citing significant environmental, archaeological, and urban planning concerns for the area.

Justice Minister Costas Fitiris has faced criticism for allegedly announcing the site selection without commissioning the necessary studies. The protection group argues that the location is environmentally sensitive and culturally significant. They specifically referenced a July 8, 2025, environmental assessment conducted for a separate 180 MW photovoltaic park project in the same vicinity, which identified severe risks to biodiversity, water resources, and the local landscape. The group asserts that these findings render the current site entirely unsuitable for prison facilities.

Demanding an immediate halt to the project, the group is urging the Ministry of Justice to abandon the current plans and conduct a comprehensive review of alternative locations.
