Drousiotis and Kyriakou appear in court over the Sandy case

Journalist Makarios Drousiotis and Kyriaki Kyriakou, known as "Sandy," appeared before the Nicosia District Court on Wednesday, September 16, 2026. This hearing marks the first formal court appearance for both defendants following the conclusion of a police investigation and the official filing of criminal charges by the Attorney-General on July 24, 2026.

The case involves a 101-count indictment that includes charges of forgery, circulation of forged documents, publication of false news, and harassment. The Legal Service initiated these proceedings after reviewing evidence submitted by police on June 30, 2026. During Wednesday’s hearing, the court was expected to formally refer the case to the Permanent Criminal Court of Nicosia for trial. The charges stem from a series of publications by Drousiotis concerning allegations of corruption and sexual misconduct, which centered on messages allegedly exchanged between a person using the pseudonym "Sandy" and a former Supreme Court official.
