CYMEPA launches public survey on shipping's green and digital transition

The Cyprus Marine Environment Protection Association (CYMEPA) has officially launched a public survey to gather community perspectives on the ongoing environmental challenges in the Eastern Mediterranean and the shifting landscape of the shipping industry. Secretary General Dr. Michalis Iereidis emphasized that the maritime sector is currently undergoing a historic transformation, characterized by the adoption of alternative fuels, digital applications, and low-emission technologies.

The initiative is part of the broader five-year METAVASEA project, which is coordinated by the Hellenic Marine Environment Protection Association (HELMEPA) and supported by the Lloyd’s Register Foundation. According to Iereidis, the primary objective of this project is to ensure that the transition to sustainable shipping remains people-centered rather than restricted to industry insiders. He asserted that the shift impacts coastal cities and society at large, rather than just shipping companies or technical experts.

CYMEPA is now encouraging residents, particularly those in coastal areas, to participate in the survey to help shape the future of environmental policy in the region. This feedback mechanism aims to integrate local socioeconomic concerns into the technical and operational adjustments being made within the shipping sector as it adapts to climate change imperatives.
